In League of Legends, there are currently only two main forms of currency in the game: riot points and blue essence.
If you’ve been to a convenience store or major chain store in North America, you’ve probably seen League of Legends Prepaid game cards among the gift card section. These prepaid cards are one way to purchase riot points. The other way to purchase riot points is through PayPal or credit/debit card online. The riot points are redeemable through the riot store for items such as summoner icons, champion skins, and emotes.
The second form of currency is called blue essence, released at the beginning of season of 2016 in patch V7.22, and cannot be purchased with real-life money. The only way to obtain blue essence is through actually playing the game itself, but what can you do with blue essence and how do you get more of it?
Upon reaching champion level 5, you will start receiving what is called a champion capsule every time you level up. Opening champion capsules gets you what is called champion shards. One way to get blue essence is disenchanting these shards.
If you were a teammate worthy of recognition, you can be recognized by your teammates with honor. Ranking up with honor will earn you honor capsules, similar to champion capsules, that can be opened for champion shards to obtain blue essence in League of Legends.
Blue essence can also be obtained from hextech chests. You can obtain them by earning an ‘S’ rank in a match that has chances to drop these chests. Then, convert key fragments into hextech keys to open up those delectable hextech chests and reach in for the blue essence.
According to some players, blue essence is relatively easy to obtain in League of Legends. They say the fastest way to earn blue essence is simply disenchanting champion shards. Players often find themselves with more blue essence than they know what to do with. Countless threads are floating on the internet with questions and concerns regarding players wanting more items to spend blue essence on.
For now, League of Legends players will just need to settle with using blue essence for champions, cosmetic items, and rune pages.
