One of the things that all fandoms do is ship characters together. What is shipping? It’s simply pushing two characters together who had no romantic interest in each other in the official writing. Like shipping Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy together.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fandom, like any other fandom, can throw ideas around regarding who they think would be a cute couple. One of the biggest right now seems to be Link x Prince Sidon which can be found almost anywhere when looking at artwork or fan-created content.
It’s definitely not out of the ordinary for a fandom to do similar things but there will always be some who take it too far by trying to make it canon or being extremely hateful towards it. It’s sad but true.
In The Legend of Zelda series, there has been at least 10 different versions of Link and very few of them have had romantic relationships in the games. So Link has been shipped with many characters in the past. Why Prince Sidon for Breath of the Wild though?
Well, Prince Sidon is very supportive of Link and it could be taken in a romantic light quite easily with some of the lines spoken by the prince, specifically directed to Link. He will say things such as “Have I mentioned how incredible you are? And how thankful I am?” This can easily be taken out of context of completing quests and moved to a more romantic one.
Looking closer at the dialogue it’s easy to see why some players want to pair Link and Prince Sidon together. It does seem to just “fit” (pun intended). Of course, The Legend Of Zelda series is not about romance but of action and adventure. If players want to include some romance then they will need to come up with it themselves through theories and fan stories, all fueled through one’s imagination.
